This was a weird find that I have known about for quite sometime but despite phone calls and emails, cannot get info on.
So your walking along Bronx River Rd, near the intersection of Midland Ave, minding your own business…
You pass one apartment after another, in fact it is a lengthy quarter-mile stretch of nothing but Apartment buildings.
Oh look…here’s another DOOR which can be used as an entrance to the building. la la la…
Smack right into the door, which obviously once had to lead into this building but now, is a door to nowhere!
You have to love this and take it from me, someone who has lived in other cities such as Las Vegas, Phoenix, Fairbanks, Boston and St. Petersburg…this is an “only in NY” type of thing. Perhaps even only in Yonkers.
This is the real entrance to the building, so why did they seal off that door? Was it once the entrance to someone’s apartment and if so, why wouldn’t they still want it in use? If you can have a street entrance to your apartment…um hello convenience, goodbye five flights of stairs due to a broken elevator.
Not only has the door survived, but so have the outside lamps, which also sit in a state of purgatory, unable to perform any more function other than being an inanimate object.
So we can only reminisce now, of the days when 801 Bronx River Rd had another street entrance and tenants of the building could enter through here, or perhaps the super of the building could enter his unit through here.
This also makes me wonder what the inside of the door looks like? Is there a handle? Do the parents have to constantly tell the kids “don’t touch that!” When they have guests, do they always mistake the “door” for an actual door to something? I guess we’ll never know…
